At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
